Shorinji Kempo Ontario Annual Taikai 2007

October 27, 2007: Shorinji Kempo Ontario held its first full Taikai today at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, the home of North York Branch. Over 40 kenshi from North York, Toronto, Huronia and Yorkville branches joined this event.

The Taikai started with an opening address and by Fontaine-sensei. Chinkon-gyo led by McCulloch-sensei (Toronto Branch) was next, followed by warm-up and some basic practice led by Oka-sensei (North York Branch).

Next up was a series of demonstrations by Ontario Branch Masters:

Tandoku Embu (solo form) - Louie-sensei (Yorkville Branch)
Tandoku Shakujo Embu (solo form with staff) - Fontaine-sensei (Huronia Branch)
Kumiembu (pairform) by McCulloch-sensei and Schaeffer-kenshi (Toronto Branch)

The opening section of the Taikai was Tandoku Embu for Shonenbu (children) and adult Kyu kenshi and Dan kenshi. This was immediately followed by Dantai Embu (group) demonstrations by North York Branch (juniors), Toronto Branch and Yorkville Branch.

We moved on to Kumiembu for Shonenbu and adult Kyu and Dan grades.

After a short break we returned for a demonstration of Unyo-ho by Schaeffer-kenshi and Montgomery-kenshi of Toronto Branch.

The winning performances in each catgeory were announced and the first place performers again showed the participants their excellent embu.
